Chennai, Nov. 3: To ensure that the ongoing flyover works in the city were not hit by land acquisition and encroachment disputes, a high-level meeting comprising officials from Chennai collectorate, revenue department and city corporation was held at the Ripon Buildings on Tuesday to organise a major land acquisition drive.

According to mayor M. Subramanian, 7.5 grounds of land at Cenetoph Road near Nandanam was required for widening the approach roads. The corporation had identified 26 properties for acquisition. The property owners approached the court against the acquisition. Recently, the court passed orders in favour of the Chennai Corporation. Subsequently land acquisition drive began on Monday and will be completed by Wednesday. Before the end of this month, the new flyover will be thrown open for public by chief minister M Karunanidhi, he said.

Similarly, the corporation would acquire 21 grounds of encroached land along the bund of Adyar river to ensure that the stormwater flow into the river was not affected during monsoon. A private farm owner has been cultivating spinach at a sprawling area of 41 grounds in the middle of Adyar river. A team of revenue and corporation officials would visit the spot on Wednesday near Saidapet and verify the patta and documents available with the private farm. If the patta and land deed were found invalid, the corporation would take over the spinach garden, the mayor said.

SALEM: A team of officials from the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board removed encroachments at Velliyankadu in Erumapalayam here on Tuesday.

Officials demolished over 30 houses constructed by occupying the land belonging to the Salem Corporation. The civic body handed over the land to the slum clearance board for the construction of apartment buildings to provide housing facilities to sanitary workers and to those who lived in the slum areas located near the Kitchipalayam dump yard.

The board had already served notices on over 80 families that occupied the Corporation land and constructed houses. The Corporation had promised these families to allot flats after constructing the buildings.

While members of 40 families vacated their houses based on the assurance from the Corporation, a few families refused to do so.

On Tuesday, the board along with the city police personnel removed the encroachments on the land.

The board officials said that the State Government allotted Rs. 10.56 crore for the construction of over 400 flats in the first phase.

The construction would be completed in nine months. In the second phase, over 440 flats would be constructed, the officials added.

Encroachments in Adyar river to be removed today

CHENNAI: Encroachments on Keerai Thottam in the Adyar river at Saidapet will be removed on Wednesday. “There are about 42 grounds of “patta lands” on the riverbed and a team of officials would be visiting the area to ascertain the facts,” Mayor M. Subramanian said.

He was participating in a meeting on removal of encroachments from water courses, including the Adyar River and the Virugambakkam Canal, on Tuesday. Those having ‘pattas’ cultivate greens on the river bed. “During the monsoons, when the river gets freshwater, the gardens are washed away but later they get fresh sand to cultivate the greens. They claim that the patta was given to them under ryotwari classification,” he said.

The 42 grounds of garden lead to flooding in Chettytottam, Nerupumedu, Jothiammal Nagar, Jothi Thottam, Vinayagapuram, Rathna Thottam, Kothavalchavady TNSCB colony and Thideernagar.

“The work on the Alandur Road Causeway in Saidapet is expected to be completed soon. Once the encroachments are removed, the flow in the river would be good. Water will not stagnate and mosquitoes cannot breed,” Mr. Subramanian said.

Officials of the Chennai Corporation, Collectorate and Public Works Department took part in the meeting.
