Foundation stone for Perambur loco works bridge laid

CHENNAI: A new road overbridge (ROB) is to come up in Perambur, adjacent to the one near the Perambur Loco Works that has been a crucial link to the residents of Kolathur, Jawahar Nagar, Perambur and Ayanavaram for almost 100 years. Union minister Dayanidhi Maran on Friday laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new bridge, which is estimated to cost Rs 8.41 crore and for which the minister and his father Murasoli Maran had contributed funds under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme.

"This had been a long-pending demand of the locals and has now materialised. I am elated that the dream project of my father, for which he contributed Rs 4.5 crore from his MPLAD Scheme, has been revived," said Dayanidhi Maran.

There were many reasons for the delay in the execution of the project, Maran said. The rise in the prices of construction material saw the cost shooting up to Rs 6 crore a few years ago. Despite tenders being floated, the project did not take shape and the Chennai Corporation only managed to repair the pot-holed stretches leading to the dilapidated old structure. At one point of time, the estimated cost of the project had gone up to as much as Rs 9.25 crore, the minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor M Subramanian expressed satisfaction over the ongoing civic projects in various parts of the city. Work on road under bridges (RUBs) at M C Choultry Street off Old Jail Road, Jones Road in Saidapet and Villivakkam and ROBs at Rangarajapuram in Kodambakkam and Korukkupet was at various stages of completion. "We want the railway to part with land near the Rangarajapuram flyover site," Subramanian said.

Southern Railway chief administrative officer R Ramanathan said the new ROB in Preambur would be 106 m long and 4.5 m wide. There will be 1.8-m wide footpaths on both sides. Seven spans, between 8 m and 18 m wide, will separate nine rail tracks. About 300 tonnes of steel and 1,250 tonnes of cement are estimated to be needed for the project that is expected to be completed in March 2010.

Southern Railway general manager M Jayanth, however, hoped the the project would be opened on Pongal next year. The railway has at least 12 ongoing subway/flyover projects in the Chennai-Arakkonam and Chennai-Tambaram sectors and another 23 which are yet to begin.

NEW FACILITY: The proposed ROB will come up near the existing road overbridge in Perambur Loco Works Station in Chennai. —

CHENNAI: Southern Railway General Manager M.S. Jayanth on Friday said that the construction of an additional road overbridge (ROB) at Perambur Loco Works will be completed by January 2010, ahead of the March 2010 deadline.

Speaking at the foundation-stone-laying ceremony of the Rs. 8.41-crore project, he said that the Loco Works figured in the list of suburban railway stations that would be upgraded under the Adarsh Railway Station programme.

Union Minister for Textiles Dayanidhi Maran, who laid the foundation stone for the ROB, underscored the need for the Chennai Corporation and Southern Railway to coordinate and construct the facility ahead of the deadline.

The need for the facility was one of the long-pending demands of the residents of Perambur.

The proposal to construct an additional bridge alongside the existing facility was made in 2004, at the cost of Rs. 4.50 crore. However, because of delays the cost had escalated to Rs.9.5 crore before the election.

Subsequently, because of a reduction in prices of construction material it had come down to Rs. 8.41 crore.

Chief Administrative Officer of Southern Railway R. Ramanathan said the existing bridge, which was 4.3 m wide, was over 50 years old and was not enough considering the increase in the number of vehicles.

Work on 12 bridges under way

In Chennai division of Southern Railway, a total of 35 bridges are to be constructed this year, of which work on 12 had already begun.

The others were delayed on account of various reasons, including the need for shifting of utility lines, land acquisition, speed restriction of trains and diversion of traffic, he added.

Mayor M. Subramanian said that the proposed ROB would be 4.5 m wide and 106.44 m long.

It would have seven spans and fly over nine railway lines. It would also have a 1.80-m-wide pedestrian footpath and two ramps.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said that the work had been taken up under deposit scheme by the Railways. Superintending Engineer (Bridges) of the Corporation M. Ramamurthi said a raft foundation would be used in the construction. Instead of the conventional method, composite steel girders and RCC slabs would be used. MLA V.S. Babu spoke.

Metro Rail okays 2 pedestrian subways

July 29th, 2009

Chennai, July 28: Decks have been cleared for the construction of two new pedestrian subways along Anna Salai at Eldams road junction and TVS bus stop.

They are among the three-dozen subways proposed by the state highways department along the Anna Salai, Inner Ring Road and EVR Periyar Salai which got delayed because of the confusion over the alignment of the Metro Rail.

“With the commencement of the Metro Rail works, we have decided to take up the long pending subway works in a phased manner,” a senior highway official said.

The Metro Rail has given clearance for the two subways and after the completion of the detailed project reports, the highways department will call for the tenders and the works will begin subsequently.

“We are also awaiting clearance for constructing a subway at Evening Bazaar Road junction along EVR Periyar Salai,” said the official.

“Work on all the three subways would be taken up this year.”

According to a study, around 1.58 lakh cars pass through Anna Salai every day though it can handle only 60,000 cars per day.

With the ever-increasing traffic density, pedestrians have to face lot of hardship to cross the roads particularly during peak hours.

“We are taking steps to alleviate the problems faced by pedestrians through these subways” the highway official said. “We also asked the Metro Rail to clear subways at Little Mount (near AG Church), TNPL office and MKN road junction along Anna Salai in Guindy.”

He added that the department also wanted to construct a major pedestrian subway at Kathipara junction connecting all the four legs.
