Corporation gears up to launch monorail project

COIMBATORE: Almost a year after the state government announced its plan to introduce Monorail transport corridor in the city, the municipal corporation is finally gearing up towards this end. The corporation will seek approval from the elected council in the next meeting to float tenders for appointing consultants to prepare a detailed Project Report pertaining to feasibility.

After obtaining the council's green signal the proposal will be forwarded to Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TUFISIL) and a tender will be floated inviting proposals from interested firms to quote their price for preparing the project report.

"We are planning to discuss the monorail project during the next corporation council meeting. It will be forwarded to Managing Director of TUFISIL after getting the council's approval," said TK Ponnusamy, Commissioner, Coimbatore Municipal Corporation.

The monorail is expected to be the biggest project implemented within city limits. Corporation officials claimed that once the initial Project Report is drafted based on a feasibility study, including route mapping and land acquisition requirement, the project will begin.

"It will be a complex process. We have to identify the most feasible routes where the project could be implemented so that it could cater to maximum people. The infrastructure requirements, including the beam support line and stations along the path would also have to be identified. Land acquisition must also be looked at," Ponnusamy added.

The corporation officials also added that only consultants with prior experience in conceiving metro or monorail projects in other parts of the country will be selected after scrutinizing the tenders. The initial DPR prepared after conducting field study in the city would be finalised only after seeking response and grievances from the public.

"The initial project report will be a provisional DPR and will be finalised only after seeking the views of residents and other stakeholders," Ponnusamy said.

The cost estimate and other details about the project are expected to be finalised in the coming days. The AIADMK government had announced a Monorail project for Coimbatore soon after coming to power last year. The former DMK government had earlier announced Metro rail network for Coimbatore and Madurai which now seems to have been shelved.

The Chennai Corporation’s multi-level parking lot proposal is set to take off on NSC Bose Road, while another proposal is to be made for T Nagar | EPS

Two-wheeler congestion will soon be a thing of the past on the NSC Bose Road.

A multi-level parking lot that was proposed by the Chennai Corporation will take off soon, with the final proposal being set to be presented before the councillors for passing on August 24. If all goes according to plan, work might start as soon as the rainy season is over, said Corporation officials.

The earmarked 897-sq metre area nestles between the Flower Bazaar Police Station to its north and the police booth at its southern end. Proposed at a cost of Rs 4 crore, the project will have four floors and a terrace, excluding the ground floor. It will be able to accommodate a minimum of 800 two-wheelers at a total built up space of more than 2,900 sq metres.

The facility will be fully equipped with elevators, abundant lighting, fire safety features and 24-hour water supply. The building will also have a solar energy feature.

Officials say that the project would facilitate reduction in haphazard parking on Rattan Bazaar Road, Govindappa Street, Godown Street, Bunder Street, Badrian Street and Malayaperumal Street. Currently, the area is used as a parking lot for two wheelers and four wheelers, but due to space constraints, vehicles are also parked on the road making the area congested. In addition to this, the study on the proposed multi-level car parking facility near Panagal Park in T Nagar is nearly complete, said officials. “This project will be wholly privatised from its design and building to its maintenance. It is almost through. Once the Parry’s project takes off, we will concentrate on this one,” said Corporation sources.

Though rate fixed is Rs. 3 per day, contractor collects Rs. 5 and issues token without payment details

Fleecing motorists and collecting fee for unauthorised parking – by the private contractor in the Salem New Integrated Bus Stand premises – continues as the City Municipal Corporation has failed to take any action.

As part of the three-year contract period, the contractor pays a sum of Rs. 1.20 lakh to the corporation and the civic body had fixed Rs. 3 as the fee for a day’s parking.

But, the contractor is collecting Rs. 5 from motorists and issues a token that has no details about the parking fee.As per the contract, a display board showing the parking fee for each day should be kept at a visible point at the stand. However, there is no such board at the place.

Fleecing of the public came to light when the parking fee board emerged during the civic body drive against encroachment recently and vanished after the drive. The stand with a vehicle parking capacity of 600 is facing a space crunch, with around 1,000 vehicles crowded inside, causing damage and putting safety in peril.

There are no fire prevention measures at the stand and fire extinguishers are not available in case of emergency. Vehicles are parked hazardously even in the available space. Another 200 vehicles are parked outside the stand for which the contractor also collects Rs. 5 per vehicle.

Though a warning board placed by the civic body warns of seizure of vehicles parked in the unauthorised area, vehicles continue to be parked and fee is collected.

This leaves little space for passengers entering the bus stand who have to walk through the little space available. Due to space crunch, vehicles have to be parked outside as continuous requests to the Corporation to allot more space did not yield any result, a worker at the stand said. The civic body recently removed the vehicles parked in the unauthorised area. But non-availability of space and failure to take stringent measures has led to fleecing of the public and prevention of unauthorised parking on the premises.
