Increasing number of vehicles, traffic snarls at peak hours, and congested roads are an area of concern to all and Coimbatore’s cry for a comprehensive traffic management system saw hardly any measure so far.

However, there are signs of relief for the city’s traffic problems. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has proposed a Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Study for Coimbatore.

K. Phanindra Reddy, Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, told presspersons here on Friday that though Coimbatore had a city road plan, it was decided to go in for a detailed study that would look at improving the public transport too and options for better traffic management. “It will give a mobility plan to the city,” he said.

The terms of reference would be prepared and bids would be called in a month to identify a consultant for the study. “When we prepare the Master Plan, we should look at transportation also,” he said. The provisions for several modes of public transport would be included in it.

The expanded Coimbatore Local Planning Area proposal was with the Government. “We are trying to overcome some technicalities,” he said. The Master Plan preparation for the entire area was on. “We want to come out with the Master Plan at the earliest.”

Skywalk

Mr. Reddy said Coimbatore so far collected Rs. 41 crore under the Infrastructure and Amenities Charges and Rs. 21 crore was spent on road works.

It was now proposed to have sky walks at two locations in the city, bus terminals at Vadavalli, Perur, Periyanaickenpalayam and Madukkarai and truck terminals at Karumathampatti and Booluvampatti. Land should be identified for the truck terminals. The Coimbatore Corporation would send the proposal in a week for a bus terminus at Vadavalli. It also suggested a truck terminal at Ukkadam. However, a feasibility study would be done for this. Truck terminals were important as it would decongest the city roads, he said.

Multi-level parking on NSC Bose Road

Staff Reporter

The Chennai Corporation will construct a multi-level parking facility, exclusively for two-wheelers, on NSC Bose Road. Bidding for the Rs. 4-crore facility will begin after the Corporation council passes a resolution next week. The proposed parking lot will be constructed on the western side of Flower Bazaar police station.

The four-storied structure will be able to accommodate 672 two-wheelers. Special sanction will be obtained from Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to construct the facility as the identified piece of land near Flower Bazaar police station is classified under institutional land use. The construction will be completed in nine months after the work order is issued.

Irregular parking in the central business district will be regulated after the construction of the parking lot, an official said. The facility will have separate entry and exit points, and an elevator and CCTV surveillance, the official said.

Design for multi-level bike parking at Parry’s to be presented today

CHENNAI: The two decades old plan for a multi-storey parking facility in Flower Bazaar will take a step forward on Friday when Mahindra Consultants will present to the corporation a layout for the bike parking facility.

The facility will come up next to the Flower Bazaar police station. It will have around 30,000 sqft of built-up area across four floors. It will have a capacity to park 650 bikes, but not any for cars. "The facility will cater to those going to shops within a 250-metre radius of the building," said an engineer from the consulting company. "We did extensive surveys to find out if people will be willing to ride four floors to park vehicles. The results were positive," he said.

At the behest of the Chennai Corporation, the project was designed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services (TNUIFSL) with World Bank funds. The quasi-government body called for consultants for the project. Based on the design TNUIFSL provides, the corporation will build and maintain the facility. "Though the parking facility will relieve the situation to an extent, I feel that the demand for parking is far greater than what the facility can provide," said an official.

The corporation is yet come up with a pricing policy for the facility. "Though the project will be economically viable, we need to consider the cost while coming up with the fees," said corporation commissioner D Karthikeyan. The consultants will also make presentations on the multi-level car parking facility near Panagal Park in T Nagar.

Experts say such a facility alone may not help. "On-street parking should be strictly controlled and there should be an incentive to make people use the parking facility," said Raj Cherubal of Chennai City Connect.
