Corporation to supply water once in two days

The new plan to be implemented from August 15 in 72 wards

Rains in catchment areas of Periyar dam in the last few days has brought good news for Madurai city. Since the water level had gone up in Vaigai dam after the recent rains, the Madurai Corporation has decided to supply drinking water once in two days starting from August 15.

Presently, it is being supplied once in four days in view of bad monsoon and lack of rainfall in the region.

Corporation Mayor V.V.Rajan Chellappa has announced on Wednesday that the water supply situation was thoroughly reviewed based on the city’s requirements for all 100 wards.

“The water level had increased to 41.63 feet in the Vaigai dam. Similarly, the Vaigai dam is getting 1,036 mcft of water from Periyar dam after the rains in catchment areas. Hence, the Madurai Corporation has decided to ease the supply,” he said in a press release.

To start with, the once-in-two-days water supply plan will be implemented from August 15 in 72 wards which were in the corporation earlier.

From August 17, the drinking water supply would be comfortable covering all areas in the city.

Mr.Rajan Chellappa further said that the 28 wards which were added to the corporation as extension areas in the peripheries of the city too will be taken care of.

Here, water will be supplied through a fleet of tankers as is being done now and more focus will be laid to ensure smooth supply as per requirements, the Mayor added.

The Mayor’s announcement comes within days of corporation council meeting when councillors urged the authorities to address drinking water scarcity in their respective wards.

Krishna water arrives in city

Krishna water, considered a lifeline to maintain the water supply for Chennai, reached the city on Tuesday morning.

Water released from Kandaleru reservoir, Andhra Pradesh, on August 1 reached Uthukottai at the Tamil Nadu border at 6 a.m., after travelling over 150 km of Kandaleru Poondi canal. By evening, it travelled another 25 km to reach Poondi reservoir, where it will be stored and distributed to the city.

The entry point received about 190 cubic feet per second. “We expect to get 300 cusecs this week, which is enough to fulfil the city’s drinking water needs. If we get 500 cusecs daily, we can store 1,200 mcft (million cubic feet) monthly, and that is adequate to supply water for more than a month,” said an official of the Water Resources Department.

As storage in city reservoirs hit a low of 1,800 mcft, just enough to sustain water supply for two months, Krishna water was the last resort to avoid a severe shortage.

Officials of Chennai Metrowater said they would start transferring the water to Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs for supply to the city. Nearly two-thirds of the supply now comes from Veeranam tank and desalination plants.

By Tuesday evening, it reached Poondi reservoir, where it will be stored and distributed to city.

Drinking water supply is ensured for residents of wards 1, 2, 3 and 5 through tankers.

Sterlite Copper has supported Tuticorin Corporation by providing trucks to supply water to these wards for four months.

P. Xavier, Mayor (in-charge), inaugurated the supply by flagging off the trucks in the presence of S. Madhumathi, Commissioner of Corporation and Pankaj Kumar, Head, Operations, Sterlite Copper at a programme near Rajaji Park here on Monday.

Each truck would supply 1,25,000 litres of drinking water per day to benefit around 1,60,000 people, sources said.

The Sterlite company had allotted Rs.15 lakh for the project.
