6,000 saplings planted in Madhavaram and Sholinganallur

The Chennai Corporation has identified 203 roads for sapling plantation during this northeast monsoon.

Work on most of the roads will be completed in a month. “Initially, we had identified 100 roads in the first phase this year. But the number of roads has been increased to 203 as per the revised list,” said an official.

Of the 23,000 saplings proposed this year, 6,000 have been planted along roads in areas such as Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. Work on important roads such as Anna Nagar Second Avenue, Tank Bund Road, R.K. Mutt Road, College Road, Haddows Road, Arcot Road, P.T. Rajan Salai, Rajamannar Salai, Mount Poonamalle Road, East Coast Road, Sardar Patel Road, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Perambur High Road, Kolathur Main Road, Paper Mills Road and Pulianthope High Road will be taken up shortly.

For example, in Anna Nagar Second Avenue, 70 saplings will be planted this month. The Corporation is also facing another challenge — commercial establishments along the roads are unwilling to plant trees near their premises for fear that this might conceal their boards and signs.

According to the revised proposal, Ennore High Road will get 800 tree saplings, Inner Ring Road in Manali will get 750, Paper Mills Road will get 500 and Kolathur Main Road will get 300.

Core city areas

But roads in the core city areas will get fewer trees because of inadequate space. For example, Corporation officials have been able to identify just 50 spots for planting saplings along the Valluvar Kottam High Road where a large number of commercial establishments have been located. Sterling Road will also get 50 saplings.

The project was begun to increase city’s green cover from 14.9% to 20.2%.

CHENNAI: Waterways free of floating plastic bags, devoid of odour and sewage are rare in the city but the Chennai corporation is planning to make it a reality by procuring amphibian equipment to clean smaller water bodies.

Tenders have been flated to buy an amphibian equipment, a mini-amphibian, and three more robotic excavators. As the civic body is going through a fund crunch, the allotment under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) will be used, a source in the civic body said. “By April, we should be able to get them,” said an official.

An amphibian is capable of efficiently removing garbage, silt, and weeds from larger canals and water bodies with a width of 3m and above. Excavators are used for micro canals that are less than 3.5m wide.

A mini-amphibian can work well in smaller water bodies with shallow water level of 1m depth or less. Besides, these machines, the civic body has deployed trash booms to collect garbage and floating plastic at nine locations across the Cooum River.

A year ago, the civic body had procured an amphibian equipment at a cost of Rs 4.43 crore from Finland, and three robotic excavators at Rs 19.65 crore to carry out dredging and hyacinth removal in water bodies. “These machines are deployed for desilting Adyar River and Velachery Lake, which are owned by the PWD. The PWD authorities are also mulling about buying the machines. It would be good if they too procure it as the work would be done faster,” said an official. According to officials, an amphibian is estimated to cost around Rs 7.5 crore, a mini-amphibian and a robotic excavator costs around Rs 1.7 crore and Rs 6.5 crore respectively.

Sources in the department said cleaning of water bodies and canals continues to be a slow process, especially before monsoon, as the existing equipment is deployed in water bodies owned by the Public Works Department (PWD).

The civic body will also be procuring six super sucker machines to remove silt from storm water drains. Now, the civic body relies on workers hired by contractors to manually enter and desilt storm water drains, which in many areas also carry sewage.

Projects worth Rs. 113.52 crore under Smart Cities Mission launched

Coimbatore Corporation will continue to retain control over water distribution under the 24x7 drinking water supply scheme, Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani said here on Sunday.

“A few who could not implement such schemes during their rule are spreading canards and also creating hindrances. I had announced in the Assembly that water distribution will not be handed over to private parties and have addressed concerns,” he said.

The Minister was here to participate in a series of ground breaking ceremonies to kick-start projects worth Rs. 113.52 crore under the Smart Cities Mission. He also inaugurated a public convenience facility.

The Minister reiterated that the Corporation will continue to retain control and the DMK working president had issued a wrong statement based on a social media message generated by a man in Kundrathur, Kancheepuram.

It was the same man who had spread falsehoods in the run-up to the Thoothukudi protest and against the Salem-Chennai green corridor project.

The State Government under Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam was favourably disposed towards Coimbatore, for which it had sanctioned a slew of projects – elevated corridor on Avinashi Road, flyovers at Ramanathapuram, Singanallur, Saibaba Colony and Kavundampalayam junctions and another flyover at Athupalam.

A press release from the Corporation said that Mr. Velumani participated in the ground breaking ceremony on the Ukkadam Big Tank bund, where Smart Cities Mission would take up development works for Rs. 39.74 crore.

He also participated in similar ceremonies to start works in Valankualm tank, construction of a new park at A.K.S. Nagar in Ward 79 and redevelopment of the D.B. Road into smart road at Rs. 24.71 crore.

Members of Legislative Assembly P.R.G. Arunkumar, V.C. Aarukutty and Amman K. Arjunan, Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, Deputy Commissioner P. Gandhimathi, City Engineer A. Lakshmanan, senior engineers Natarajan, K. Gnanavel, amd Saravanakumar and others were present at the function.
