Chennai
July 17: Chennaiites will be able to pay taxes to the corporation and clear their water and electricity bills via cell phone in a few months.

All they have to do is download free software from the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (Elcot) website.

Making use of this, consumers can furnish their credit or debit account details and finish their payments in minutes.

Tamil Nadu is the first state in the country to implement such a scheme which will relieve people from the drudgery of waiting in serpentine queues to pay their bills. “The project will be first tried out on a pilot basis in Chennai,” said Mr Santosh Babu, managing director, Elcot, at a two-day conference on e-governance organised by Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

“We have coordinated with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Metro Water Board, the city corporation, banks, financial institutions and telecom service providers to make it possible for customers to pay their bills through cell phones,” he added. Elcot is also coming up with a project to offer desktop computers with all key features at rates ranging from Rs 10, 000 to Rs 12, 000. This will be boon to middle and lower income groups. The IT secretary, Mr P.W.C. Davidar, revealed that the labour department would soon launch an online portal for job seekers. He also stated that 12 government departments, including important ones such as health and revenue were already undertaking total computerisation to create paperless offices.

TIRUCHI: Officials of the Tiruchi Corporation took up an encroachment eviction drive along the Singarathope, N.S.B. Road and Theradi Veedhi in the city on Friday.

The drive focussed on removing unauthorised structures such as platforms and shelters put up in front of shops and commercial establishments. Nearly 50 temporary shelters and about 60 platform structures were removed. Many shopkeepers voluntarily removed the structures put up in the front of their shops in the wake of the operation conducted under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner K. Sundaram and Assistant Executive Engineer N. Balaguru.

The eviction drive in the busy commercial centre of the city was conducted amid tight security. Commissioner T.T. Balsamy said the civic body would also initiate follow-up action on the drive to ensure that the encroachments did not come back.

SALEM: The removal of silt in a portion of Tirumanimutharu, a major river turned sewer, began here on Friday.

The Salem Corporation has taken up the work as the river had accumulated silt due to dumping of solid waste by commercial establishments.

The Corporation has deployed a team of workers and earthmovers to remove the silt on a part of the river course between Ananda Bridge and Apsara Theatre.

Meanwhile, citizens urged the civic body to initiate concrete measures to prevent the commercial establishments from dumping solid waste into the channel.

Though the civic body had issued warnings earlier, the establishments continued to dump garbage in the channel.

People wanted the civic body to ensure regular cleaning of the channel.

They also appealed to the Corporation to expedite the implementation of the second phase of the Tirumanimutharu river project.

The second phase is aimed at lining the bed and bunds to a length of 590 metres in the upstream area of the river starting from Anaimedu and 2,210 metres in the downstream area, starting from Apsara Theatre.
