Implement new pension scheme, says transport staff body

Special Correspondent

THANJAVUR: General secretary of the Tamil Nadu Government Transport Corporation Employees’ Union J. Lakshmanan has appealed to the State Government to implement the new pension scheme as suggested by the Pension reforms committee appointed by the Government for the benefit of transport Corporation employees.

He told presspersons here on Thursday that it was expected that an announcement would come about pension scheme in the recent assembly session when debate on transport department was taken up. But it has not been announced.

He also pointed out the anomaly in salary structure implemented for transport corporation employees. While those from supervisor to managing director were getting salary as State Government employees, drivers and conductors are paid salary of the corporation.

This anomaly should be removed and state salary should be paid for all. Bonus should be paid to employees as per Bonus Act, including those who had worked for more than 400 days.

The Government has said that the corporations are running on a lossof Rs. 1,032 crore.

Bail out corporations

It should immediately release Rs. 2,000 crore to bail out these corporations.

Both central and state Governments should consider giving excise duty relief and sales tax relief to offset the hike in expenditure incurred by the corporations due to petrol and diesel price increase.

He said that 20,104 buses were operated by the corporation, covering 75,000 km per day.

Nearly two crore passengers travel in corporation buses. There are 1.35 lakh employees.

Highlighting these demands, corporation employees staged a demonstration before the divisional office here on Thursday. C. Chandrakumar, AITUC state vice-president, and D. Mathivanan, general secretary of the Thanjavur unit of the employees union, participated in the demonstration.

Mr. Lakshmanan also demanded that the demands of the house surgeons and post graduates who are on hunger strike demanding hike in stipend be met by the Government immediately.

COIMBATORE: Residents, members of non-Governmental organisations and elected representatives of the Coimbatore Corporation took a pledge at Ward 3 here recently to take the civic body’s solid waste management programme forward, so that the city remained clean.

The pledge was part of a series of events being held by the Corporation to sensitise the public to the need for segregation of waste at source. Administered by Mayor R. Venkatachalam, the pledge contained guidelines for the residents on how to go about segregating waste generated kitchen and garden waste and other types of garbage generated every day.

Deputy Mayor N. Karthik, North Zone Chairman C. Padmanabhan, Health Committee Chairman P. Nachimuthu, Assistant City Health Officer R. Sumathi and Priscilla of Green Mother Trust were also took the pledge.

Officials in the civic body pointed out that the Corporation was already distributing/pasting stickers containing these guidelines.

Model wards

The public at Ward 3, one of the nine model wards chosen for a pilot project, were told that segregation at source was an effective method to reduce the burden on the Corporation in waste management. If people kept biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste in separate bins at home and handed these over to the conservancy workers, the Corporation could handle tougher tasks such as turning waste into manure and disposal through landfills.

Alternate day supply to resume today

RELIEF: Water overflowing from the Pilloor Dam is good news for Coimbatore city and suburbs. —

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation will resume alternate day supply of drinking water in the city on Friday what with water overflowing from the Pilloor Dam on Thursday and the water level rising fast in the Siruvani Dam, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra said.

Water supply officials in the Corporation said 35,000 cusecs were being discharged from the Pilloor Dam as storage had reached the full capacity of 1,568 million cubic feet. As the inflow was 35,000 ft, that much water had to be let into River Bhavani, they said.

Mayor R. Venkatachalam said the level in the Siruvani Dam was also rising quickly towards the full reservoir level of 67.44 ft. It was 54 ft at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.

The level rose sharply from 49 ft on Wednesday morning because of 190 mm rain. The dam had 121 mm rain on Wednesday also.

The Mayor said reports from Siruvani Dam said there was heavy rain throughout the day. “ There is heavy inflow from all the falls that bring water from the upper reaches of Siruvani Hills,” he said. “If heavy rain continues, water may overflow from Siruvani Dam on Sunday. We very nearly had a scare during this summer. The monsoon seems to have saved us, at least for now,” he said.

The Commissioner said: “People should still exercise caution in the use of drinking water as the Siruvani Dam is not full yet.”

Though the South West Monsoon was delayed and even dormant for some time, the overflow from Pilloor Dam this time had happened earlier than the one last year, Corporation sources pointed out.

Last year, water overflowed from the dam on July 26. This year, the rain had been heavy enough to make up for the delay.
