After 20 yrs, way cleared for link road in Tambaram

CHENNAI: It took a long time coming but when it finally came, on Wednesday, nearly 20,000 residents of East Tambaram and Selaiyur were elated. Two decades after the first petition was filed for the link road, the Tambaram municipality finally cleared the way for laying an access road connecting Avaithar Street in Selaiyur with Velachery Main Road.

"This is a dream come true for thousands of residents. It cut shorts the distance by nearly three kilometres," said K Vijayalakshmi, a resident of New Balaji Nagar.

Currently, residents of New Balaji Nagar, IOB Colony, Bharathi Nagar, Selaiyur (South) and adjoining areas reach Velachery Main Road via Camp Road that belongs to the Indian Air Force. All these years, they had a tough time as the road was often restricted for traffic movement for security reasons.

Now all that is set to end soon. "I was in my 20s when the issue was first highlighted by the residents. Since then, the problem has been raised at every forum such as welfare association meetings, monthly council meetings and grievances meetings," said a Tambaram municipality official.

According to sources, the municipality acquired 6,000 sq ft of land from private owners for the 24-ft wide link road. It paid the required Rs 10.90 lakh to the revenue department of the Kancheepuram district in 2002 but procedural delays hampered the muncipality's efforts to lay the road. The issue was tabled in the monthly council meeting in 1989 and was cleared by the councillors.

Since then, repeated reminders were made by municipal officials and by the elected representative of the ward concerned (Ward No:20) at the monthly council meetings and now the dream has come true. "We will immediately level the ground and lay a 'kutcha' road. After a resolution is passing at the upcoming council meeting for topping it with bitumen along with the estimate, we will lay a permanent road on the existing stretch," sources said.

To renovate Anna Bus Stand

Municipality planning a proposal seeking Rs. 3 crore

A discussion to be held on Friday in the council meeting

Nagercoil: It has been decided to renovate the Anna Bus Stand and a proposal in this connection would be forwarded seeking allotment of adequate funds, said the chairman or Nagercoil Municipality, Asokan Solomon.

. The State government had allotted Rs. 2 crore for the development works to be carried out under the Integrated Development Planning Scheme. The municipality had prepared strategic plans for renovation of Vadaserry vegetable and fish markets with the allocated funds.

Since no company came forward to bag tenders for the renovation works, it got delayed for three years. Subsequently the Centre had ordered the revocation of funds stating that the State Government could not provide funds for the renovation and the municipality should bear the cost.

Meanwhile the municipality had decided to use the same fund for the renovation of Anna Bus Stand, which was also getting delayed.

But the State government subsequently withdrew the amount saying that the municipality was not authorised to utilize a fund that was meant of another project. Therefore the municipality was planning to place a proposal seeking Rs. 3 crore for the renovation of Anna Bus Stand and Vadaserry market. A discussion in this connection would be held on Friday since the council meeting was postponed to Friday.

As the municipality was on the verge of returning the unused grant to the government, councillors of AIADMK and MDMK criticised the authorities who seemed least bothered about the development of the Nagercoil Municipal limits.

Project to end water woes ready

Chennai, July 7: Water problems faced by the residents of tail-end areas may soon become a thing of the past. According to CMWSSB sources, the Metro Water department is in the final stages of a Rs 337 crore project which could wipe out the water woes of tail-end areas. Such areas have been identified by officials of Chennai metropolitan water supply and sewerage board (CMWSSB) as those that receive erratic water supply. The mega project is slated to be completed by 2011.

Metro Water sources pointed out that for years the city water supply was using four water distribution stations: Kilpauk, Anna Poonga, Southern Head Works and K K Nagar. However, due to the vastness of the city, tail-end areas like some parts of Velachery, Tondiarpet, Old Washermenpet, Ayanavaram, etc., did not receive adequate supply.

“To tide over the situation, CMWSSB decided to improve the existing systems as well as create 12 more additional systems. Our objective is to have water distribution system in all 16 zones, each having an independent water distribution station,” a highly-placed Metro Water official told Deccan Chronicle.

According to the official, CMWSSB identified Kannapparthidal, Vyasarpadi, Patel Nagar, Kulathur, Choolaimedu, Ekkattuthangal, Valluvarkottam, Triplicane, Pallipattu, Velachery, Mylapore and Nandanam as areas for installing additional systems and stations.

“Works on 11 water distribution systems and 12 water distribution stations have already been completed under World Bank funding. The remaining works that include the water distribution stations at Kilpauk, K K Nagar and Anna Poonga, and water distribution systems at Kilpauk, K K Nagar, Anna Poonga, Southern Head Works and Triplicane will be completed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission funding,” said the Metro Water official.

Works on three water distribution stations will get over by 2009-end.
