Siruvani water supply schedule for June 3

COIMBATORE: Drinking water under the Siruvani scheme will be supplied in the following overhead tank areas on the third day (June 3) as part of the once-in-four days distribution schedule:

Gandhi Park (Wards 42, 45, 46): 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.; (Wards 39, 40 and 54): 5 a.m. to 8.30 a.m.; (Ward 38) 4.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Cheran Nagar (Wards 53, 54 and a part of 52 and 56): 8 a.m. to noon; Seeranaickenpalayam (Wards 57, 58): 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Ramnagar, Sivananda Colony and Tatabad (Wards 31, 33): 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rayappapuram (Wards 67, 68): 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; R.G. Nagar (Wards 66, 67): 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; V.O.C. Park (including Race Course area consisting of wards 20, 21, 26, 27): 4 a.m. to 1 p.m.; (Wards 20, 21, 26, 27 consisting of areas in Kattoor): 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Jayanagar (Ward 65): 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Ramaswamy Nagar (Ward 65): 4 a.m. to 10 a.m.; Town Hall (Ward 13, 39, 40 and a part of 12, 25 and 26): 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Sidhapudur (Wards 19, 20 consisting of Pazhayur areas): 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

New building sealed for rules violation

Corporation taking action only after serving notice on owner two months ago

ACTION: A building on Head Post Office Road near the Collectorate in the city sealed for violation.

COIMBATORE: The Corporation, in association with the Local Planning Authority, sealed on Monday in the city a new building on charges of violating building rules, including non-provision of space for parking vehicles.

The building, on Head Post Office Road near the Collectorate, was to house a restaurant and offices. While permission had been obtained for only 15,000 sq.ft., the total constructed area was 40,000 sq.ft.

Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra had warned late last week that the Corporation would take stringent action on cases of building rules violation.

Parking space

The civic body and the planning authority wanted to prevent the violation that mostly pertained to parking space.

Many owners/builders got building plans approved by earmarking parking space. But, the buildings came up with shops taking up parking space.

In the case of the building sealed on Monday, structures for shops had been built in the basement meant for parking of vehicles. A portion of the basement itself was a violation as it extended to a point below the pavement along the road, Mr. Mishra said.

The Corporation took action only after serving a notice on the building owner two months ago, he said.

The building was about to be inaugurated with a puja on Monday morning.

Learning about this, teams from the Corporation rushed to the spot and vacated the people from the building.

Officials from the civic body and also the Local Planning Authority sealed the building.

Warning

“We first warned of action. Now, we are into taking it. This will be the fate of all the buildings that have been constructed in violation of rules,” the Commissioner said.

Preliminary work begins on road along MRTS at Perungudi

IMPROVING CONNECTIVITY: Survey of the area near the Perungudi MRTS station being conducted for a new road, on Monday.

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has started work on the road that will run parallel to the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) network from the Velachery to Taramani stations.

Starting close to the parking lot of the Velachery Station, the road will connect the New Veeranam Salai near the Taramani station. It is expected to meet the requirement of good road connectivity for MRTS users. The Taramani Link Road, which is the only major road link near the MRTS, is far away from the stations. The New Veeranam Salai connects Taramani Link Road and the Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

The upcoming 3-km long road will be a two-lane facility. From the Velachery station to Perungudi station, the road will come up on one side of the track and in the rest of the stretch up to Taramani Station on the other side. A road overbridge near the Perungudi station would connect the two stretches.

Chief Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway Neenu Ittyerah said work on the stretch between the Taramani and Perungudi stations has begun. On the portion connecting the Perungudi and Velachery stations, the work would begin shortly.

She said the Metropolitan Transport Project, which is developing the road, has planned to complete this project in six months. Any delay would be only on account of the time taken to remove encroachments by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

Former Anna University professor T. Ananatharajan, who had organised several seminars on multi-modal transport, was happy that the road was being laid. He said that while Southern Railway was taking steps to form a road along a part of the MRTS network, the Chennai Corporation has done little to improve the road from Taramani Link Road to the Perungudi station.

As a result, the station is underutilised because the road running through the thickly populated residential areas and the railway station was in bad shape and did not have proper street lighting.

Though the new road would ease traffic congestion on Taramani Link Road, residents are concerned that it would aggravate the problem of water stagnation during monsoon in the nearby residential areas.

S. Kumararaja, secretary, Federation of Velachery Residents Welfare Association, said with sand bars below the elevated tracks already blocking the free flow of the water to the Pallikaranai marshland, the new road would compound the problem. He wanted the railway authorities to provide stormwater drains on the road.
