Cricket tournament for better coordination among agencies planned

The matches will be played on July 5

Four teams will participate

MYSORE: Can cricket help bring better coordination among the “key players” for realising goals such as completing projects under the JNNURM? Well, it seems so.

With officers’ in-charge of executing and monitoring JNNURM projects coming under flak for the slow progress or complaints of lack of coordination among the agencies involved in the mission under which projects worth Rs. 614 crore had been approved for the city, this initiative has been mooted as a booster to the JNNURM projects.

It is largely viewed that JNNURM is a golden opportunity for the city to get maximum benefit from the Centre’s gesture to upgrade its infrastructure for the next 50 years.

Keeping the opinions in mind, Deputy Commissioner and JNNURM Special Officer P. Manivannan has come up with the idea of holding a cricket tourney, perhaps on T-20 model, to improve coordination among the government officers and elected representatives, which thereby help in realising JNNURM projects in time.

The media and the NGOs are also part of this exercise since they are playing the role of “watchdogs”.

Mr. Manivannan told The Hindu that said most JNNURM projects were on track, but some still needed to be pushed further.

“We have found dearth in coordination between the officers of some agencies and greater progress can be achieved if this deficiency is addressed. Cricket, we thought, is the right step to achieve the expected results. It is an attempt to refresh their minds and expect faster results,” he said.

The matches will be held at University Oval Grounds on July 5 among four teams which are called JNNURM Team One, Two, Three and Four.

Team One will have Mayor as the Captain and corporators as the players; Team Two comprising officers of the MCC will be led by the MCC commissioner; Team Three is represented by the media and the Team Four consists of the representatives of non-governmental organisations.

Deputy Commissioner inspects Bijapur CMC meeting hall

Taking stock: Deputy Commissioner R. Shantraju on Wednesday inspecting documents that were burnt in the CMC meeting hall in Bijapur.

Bijapur: Deputy Commissioner R. Shantraju on Wednesday visited the City Municipal Council (CMC) meeting hall, where some miscreants had attempted to set fire to the CMC president’s chair and some official documents on Tuesday during a Janata Dal (Secular) protest rally. The Deputy Commissioner also inspected the documents that were burnt in the incident.

Mr. Shantraju said that the incident may have been staged by some vested interest groups who wanted to divert attention from the operation launched by the CMC to remove all illegal water connections in the city. He instructed the CMC officials not to be disturbed by such tactics and continue the operation until all illegal tap connections were removed and smooth drinking water supply was ensured.

Case

“CMC authorities have filed a case with the city police. A thorough inquiry will be conducted and action will be initiated against the culprits,” he added.

However some CMC councillors, who did not want to be named, said that the presence of important documents at the spot indicated the hand of CMC staff in the incident. Several anomalies had come up at the recent budget meeting and inquiries had been initiated, they said. Perhaps, they wanted all related documents burnt.

“There was no need to keep the officials documents in the CMC meeting hall,” they said. “The staff should bring important files only during the meeting and later keep them in the sections concerned.”

Says Karnataka can reach the top slot in India with its help

BANGALORE: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Wednesday expressed optimism that Karnataka could emerge as number one in the country if the blueprint for development drawn up by the Vision 2020 Task Force was implemented.

“I believe that Karnataka, which is placed seventh in the country’s development map, can reach the top slot with the help of the blueprint,” Mr. Yeddyurappa said while addressing a meeting of the Vision Group 2020 here.

12 key areas

The Chief Minister said the Vision 2020 Task Force had dwelt upon 12 key areas, including Agriculture, Rural Development, Education, Health, Irrigation and Transport, to achieve all-round development of the State.

Pointing out that the Cabinet, at its meeting on May 22, 2009, had approved the Vision 2020 document, Mr. Yeddyurappa directed the Planning and Finance departments to initiate steps to include its contents in the next State Budget.

The Vision 2020 document has recommended steps for increasing income through agriculture, creating employment avenues for the working class through skill development and financial assistance, creating a knowledge society, improving the quality of healthcare for all sections of society, planned industrialisation and urbanisation and appropriate representation to women in economic, social and political areas.

The document also recommends steps to improve power availability to boost productivity, conserving the State’s environmental and natural resources, ensure Bangalore occupies the pre-eminent position in information technology, and achieving decentralisation through administrative reforms.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairman of State Planning Board D.H. Shankaramurthy and senior officials of the State government.
