MCD survey on hawkers in city

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will soon start survey, registration, preparation of bio-metric, bio-cryptic photo identity cards, work relating to comprehensive three dimensional coverage and creation of data base of squatters and vendors engaged in tehbazari and squatting activities from December, 2009.

According to mayor Dr Kanwar Sain, there is a need to create database of all the hawkers and vendors in Delhi to regulate their activities and licensing system. It will also help in monitoring their activities from security angle which is a prime concern of police. The database so created will be shared with Delhi Police also.

The mayor said that MCD had framed a scheme way back in year 2007 to regulate the activity of squatting and vending under the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors-2004 on the directions of the Supreme Court. He informed that as per the directions of the Honble Supreme Court, MCD is undertaking the work to relocate the vendors to take care of problems like inadequate walking space for pedestrian and traffic congestion.

Dr Sain informed that the work has been entrusted to a Delhi-based company namely M/s INDIVELOP, which has been selected after competition through tendering procedure and stiff negotiations of rates in public interest.
