MC orders sealing of six commercial units
CHANDIGARH: Taking strict action against commercial establishments not adopting fire safety norms, municipal corporation on Wednesday ordered sealing of six buildings in Chandigarh. The commercial units were reportedly served number of notices to install fire safety equipment, but no action was taken to change the state of affairs.

Out of the six, five are Sector 34-based showrooms and one is a factory unit in industrial area.

Meanwhile, a letter has been written to senior police officials for making requisite arrangements to maintain law and order and avoid any insurgency during the sealing drive.

A team comprising inspectors and station fire officers was formed on to carry out the sealing operations.

According to a senior MC official, the said commercial establishments were served number of notices but no measures were taken by them to make the buildings safer.

“The sealing order has been slapped against these units under various sections of the Fire Prevention and Safety Act 1986,” he added.

While talking to The Times of India, PK Sharma, additional commissioner-cum-secretary, MC, said, “We have served notices to five showrooms and one factory unit. Sealing orders will be issued against anybody who flouts fire safety norms despite getting warnings from the civic body.”
