PMC push to train women cops on self defence

Despite the proposal getting rejected in past, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has once again pushed for a proposal to train women cops on self-defence. In a proposal tabled in the women and child welfare committee, the civic administration expressed the need to train women cops on self defence. "There are around 5,000 girl students in secondary schools run by civic body. It would be good to train them on self defence in a three-month training period," it said.

The administration said the 200 master trainer should be trained by the civic body so that they train other women in the city for the same. "The selection of candidates should be done through social organisations on the set criteria. If the women recommended by social organisations fail to fulfil the criteria of physical fitness then the remaining seat of the total 200 should be used to train women cops," it said.

Earlier, the elected representatives had set aside the suggestion of civic administration to train 150 women cops on self-defence who were to later train women across the city. The civic administration has invited expression of interest from organisations willing to carry out the responsibility of the civic administration to which 17 responded. The administration selected three organisations to provide 50 representatives and decided to shortlist 150 representatives from the police department.
