Five districts to get egovernance

 

CHENNAI: In a bid to link districts under the egovernance scheme, the state government will roll out edistrict projects in five districts from August 2, according to IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna.

Speaking after inaugurating CeTIT 2010 here on Tuesday, she said the pilot project would be inaugurated by Deputy CM M K Stalin in Coimbatore.

The Rs 15crore edistrict project funded by the Centre will be implemented in Coimbatore, Krishnagiri, Tiruvarur, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Nilgiris districts. The project will provide services including issuance of certificate of domicile, nativity, caste, marriage, income, employment besides social welfare pensions, revenue court cases, government dues and recovery, public distribution system and right to information services.

This will help carry out automation of the work and internal processes of district administration with the possibility of seamless integration of various departments for providing services to citizens. The server for the district egovernance initiative will be located in Perungudi.

Poongothai said the government would implement esecurity policy to protect users. "It looks at all aspects of esecurity from the aspect of governance," said PWC Davidar, principal secretary of IT department. The draft is in final stages and is awaiting the nod of the CM.

Poongothai said that with the complete implementation of Statewide area network , more than one million km area and about 100,000 government entities will be covered by it. This will result in a paradigm shift not only in administration but also in the mindset of all stakeholders. "The egovernance initiative is an ideal service where minimum data has to be filled, with immediate acknowledgement, where one gets the status of application, a grievance redress at any point besides data privacy and single window services with multiple departments," Poongothai added.

Cognizant Technology Solutions vicechairman Lakshmi Narayanan highlighted the need to invest in technology to bring in good governance. Dr Santosh Babu, MD, ELCOT, and P Murari, advisor to Federation of ICCI, were present.
