TIRUNELVELI: A group of students from Corporation Higher Secondary School at Pettai near here submitted a petition to Collector R. Palaniyandi on Monday during the weekly grievance day meeting, appealing to him to continue the general machinist vocational section in their school.

The students said the section, having a Rs. 1 lakh-worth lathe, drilling machine, grinding machine and other equipment, had produced a school topper _ P. Muthupattan _ who had scored 1068 out of 1200 in the recently declared Plus Two results.

At a time when the students are coming forward to join this course, some teachers and school officials are allegedly discouraging them.

Even after the Director of School Education had assured them that the course would not be discontinued, the school administration was working overtime to close it, the students alleged.
