Corpn begins screening of kids for renal disorders

CHENNAI: The city corporation on Monday began screening of 1.05 lakh students for renal disorders. The massive exercise will cover students of all 273 middle, high and higher secondary schools in 10 zones of the city.

Inaugurating the programme at Chennai High School on Sringeri Mutt Road in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar, mayor M Subramanian said the screening would help children get treatment on time. "There are reports that suggest the disease affects more than 25% of children. It could be contained if diagnosis is done at an early stage," he said.

There are 50,000 persons undergoing dialysis in the city, while more than 2.5 lakh people are undergoing treatment for kidney-related diseases in private and government hospitals, he added. The mayor said the screening will be completed in 10 days.
