No passing remark: Corporation Commissioner S.Sebastine felicitating students for successfully passing public examinations at a function held in the city on Thursday.

MADURAI: At a time when many parents have a dilemma over choosing a tuition centre for their children and providing various facilities at home to make a congenial atmosphere to study, the children of conservancy workers have to do everything on their own while their parents are busy taking care of the hygiene of the city.

In an effort to instil confidence in these students, a function was organised to appreciate their efforts. Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine distributed certificates and shields to students who had passed X and XII public examinations. Thirty students were felicitated at the function in which B. R. Ambedkar’s words, “educate, agitate and organise,” were recalled.

Mr. Sebastine congratulated the students and said that given the appalling conditions in which they had to prepare themselves for the examinations, a pass mark itself was equivalent to the achievement of a topper.

He was confident that the day was not far off when the students of conservancy workers would be toppers in every sphere of education.

The government too had been playing its role to perfection by providing the much-needed economic assistance to pursue education, Mr. Sebastine said.

A discussion was also held and guidance on pursuing higher education given to the students.

G. Mayilanandam, Commissioner, Income Tax, and K. Sakthivel, Chief Engineer, Corporation, were present. The function was organised by G. Jayaraj of Annai Teresa Rural Development Trust.
