Dindigul Corporation plans to tap solar energy from roof of schools

The entire power will be fully utilised by respective schools only

The Dindigul Corporation has taken an initiative to tap solar energy not only to meet its power requirements but also to scale down its electricity bills.

It has started tapping solar energy using roof of corporation schools in the town.

Inspecting solar power panels commissioned at Sourashtra Primary School at Nagal Nagar near here on Wednesday, Collector N. Venkatachalam said that the solar power generation projects had been implemented in Municipal Sourashtra Primary School, Nehruji Higher Secondary School and Centenary Memorial Prime School in Dindigul.

Solar panels that could generate five KW power had been commissioned on the roof of the Centenary Memorial Prime School, Two KVA power generating solar panels each installed at Sourashtra Primary School and Nehruji Higher Secondary School at an estimated cost of Rs.20 lakh, he pointed out.

The entire power generated through these solar power plants will be fully utilised by the respective schools only. This power will be utilised to operate computers, TV, VCD and other electronic instruments in the school.

The project will be extended to panchayat, panchayat union and municipal schools in other parts of the district in a phased manner.

Mayor V. Marudha Raj said that more infrastructure would be created in corporation schools for the convenience of students.

The Corporation expedited construction of Amma Canteen at Dindigul Government Hospital and near the Anna Commercial Complex. The State government had allocated Rs.50 lakh for these projects.

Besides, the Corporation has been paying special attention on renovating waterbodies to recharge groundwater table and improve storage capacity in and around Dindigul.

Desilting was over at Gopalsamudram tank. Kottai Kulam was being desilted at an estimated cost of Rs.10 lakh.

Tender had been floated for replacing pipelines connecting the Athoor dam and Dindigul water supply station and desilt the dam. The State government had sanctioned Rs.70 lakh for this project, he added.
