Water supply works in full swing, says Minister

TIRUCHI: The Rs.169-crore Tiruchi Corporation drinking water supply scheme work being carried out through the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) with the financial assistance from Japan, Tamil Nadu Government and Tiruchi Corporation is in full swing, said Transport Minister K. N. Nehru here on Monday.

The Minister who inspected the laying of a half a kilometre stretch of main pipeline across Cauvery River at Kambarasampettai said that it would take few months to finish the works.

He pointed out that the laying of water supply pipeline in the areas of Kirakkipatti, Anbunagar, Kallukuzhi, Kajamalai, Kamaraj Nagar, Amman Nagar, Krishnamurthi Nagar, Sundaraj Nagar, Ariyamangalam, Malayappa Nagar, Rail Nagar, Jaganathapuram, Melakalkandarkottai, Ponneripuram, Ponmalaipatti, Sangiliandapuram and Vivekanandapuram covered under the Ponmalai comprehensive water supply scheme was now complete. This would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi during his visit to inaugurate the new Collectorate complex here in the first week of September.

The work included construction of three wells in the Coleroon river at Melur area in Srirangam; two huge ground-level tanks; 35 overhead tanks at various places; laying of 88.59 km stretch of main and branch pipeline and 262 km stretch of drinking water distribution pipelines and also replacing of 446 km length of old pipelines, etc. A five-km stretch of main pipeline had been laid from the main well (No.3) on the northern bank of Cauvery river. Mayor S.Sujatha; Corporation Commissioner T.T.Balsamy; and other officials were present.
