Chennai Corporation inducts 40 compactors to clear building debris

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Friday inducted 40 new compactors to clear building debris in the city.

The corporation had spent Rs 7 crore to procure the compactors to collect debris from its 15 zones, said mayor Saidai S Duraisamy on Friday.

Sources said an average of 700 tonnes of debris is dumped in the city daily. Many storm water drains were found clogged even after desilting because of the dumping of debris.

The corporation's complaint cell (1913) receives an average of 20 calls per day about debris on the streets causing problems to pedestrians. Most of the complaints were from Sholinganallur, Perungudi, Velachery, Pallikaranai and Ambattur, the sources added.
