CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation and Neel Metal Fanalca organised a rally as part of an awareness programme on source segregation on Monday.

“We are planning to increase the amount of segregated waste material to 300 tonnes a month,” said G.Thirugnana Sambandam, vice-president of Neel Metal Fanalca.

Neel Metal Fanalca segregates 100 tonnes of waste every month, he said. As part of the source segregation initiative, 50 new tricycles and 100 yellow bins would be launched on Tuesday to clean slums in Corporation Zones 3, 6, 8 and 10, said Mr. Sambandam.

Employees of Neel Metal Fanalca and officials of the Chennai Corporation participated in the rally.

M.Venkatesan, one of the sanitary workers, who participated in the rally said most of the residents were not contributing to the source segregation of waste.

Street plays have been staged in many localities to create awareness about the need for source segregation. Around 100 trained employees will be part of the awareness campaign, said Mr. Sambandam.

Residents are requested to start segregation of waste in order to make the work of our employees easier, he said. The support of the public is more important in this campaign, said Mr. Sambandam.
