Council nod for upgrading slums

Civic debate: Chandra Bose, Congress member, discussing an issue at the council meeting in Tuticorin on Thursday.

Tuticorin: The Corporation council, which met here on Thursday, gave its approval for floating a tender to upgrade eight slums. A proposal to give five shops in the new bus stand on lease was also approved.

The move to hand over maintenance of crematorium to a non-governmental organisation was also approved by the Council.

To a question from Easwaran, councillor representing the Shanmugapuram ward, the Mayor said that tricycles would be used for the purpose of solid waste management as per the specification of the Director of Municipal Administration.

Many councillors unanimously objected to the sticking of wall posters inside the new bus stand premises.

Chandra Bose, councillor, ward 51, complained about poor water supply at Millerpuram following a fault in the pumpset. He was assured that the problem would be solved in a couple of days.

Mayor R. Kasthuri Thangam presided. Thommai Jesuadiyan, Deputy Mayor, R. Lakshmi, Commissioner of Corporation, S.A. Rajagopalan, Executive Engineer, Corporation and M. Rakkappan, Senior Town Planning Officer were present.
