Nehru inspects slum development work

1,208 houses are being constructed under the programme


INSPECTION: Transport Minister K.N. Nehru inspecting the integrated housing and slum development project at Woriyur in Tiruchi on Monday.

TIRUCHI: Transport Minister K.N. Nehru on Monday inspected the progress of the work of construction of houses in slum areas in Corporation limits. A total of 1,208 houses are being constructed under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme at a total cost of Rs. 19.96 crore in 36 recognised slum areas in four zones falling under the Corporation limits.

The project is being implemented with subsidy provided by the Central and State governments besides from the public funds of the Corporation and from contribution of the beneficiaries. Works are under way to lay roads, construct storm water drains besides provision of drinking water and street light facility as part of the project.

A press release from the Corporation said Mr. Nehru inspected the ongoing construction works at Woraiyur Kalnayakkan street in K. Abishekapuram zone. The Minister was accompanied by Collector T. Soundiah, Mayor S. Sujatha, Corporation Commissioner T.T, Balsamy and officials of the civic body.

While Rs. 15.155 crore was being utilised for construction of houses and for carrying out improvements, a sum of Rs. 4.80 crore was being used for creation of basic amenities.
