Staff Reporter

Requests by political parties to be considered

MADURAI: The Corporation will take a re-look at the rate of revision of property tax for new buildings during the next council meeting, Mayor, G. Thenmozhi, has said.

After an all-party meeting of Corporation councillors held here on Friday, she said the requests made by leaders of political parties would be taken into consideration and the final decision on the issue would be taken at the next council meeting.

The Corporation had decided to increase property tax for residential buildings by 20 per cent, commercial buildings by 100 per cent and industrial buildings by 150 per cent following guidelines issued by the State Government.

Several trade bodies and residents’ associations had objected to these rates of revision.

At a discussion held here last week, representatives of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry asked the officials to reduce the rate of revision.

The all-party meeting was convened to discuss the issue in which the Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine, and K. Esakkimuthu and A. Manickam (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), P. Salaimuthu (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), M. Ganesan (Communist Party of India – Marxist) and Subburam and I. Siluvai (Congress) took part. All the zonal Assistant Commissioners and Assistant Revenue Officers also participated.
