Corporation to conduct tax collection camps

Staff Reporter

SALEM: The Salem Corporation will conduct a series of special tax collection camps in all the four zones in the city starting on September 7.

Announcing this at a meeting organised to review the tax collection here on Thursday, Corporation Commissioner K.S. Palanisamy said over 14,500 persons had not remitted their property tax and over 6,100 persons had defaulted from paying water charges in the last three years.

Charges

The total property tax and water charges to be collected from them were over Rs. 3 crore.

The administration would inform all these defaulters to pay the taxes during the special camps.

Civic officials would also visit the defaulters in person and ask them to pay the taxes.

A team of 10 officials led by an assistant commissioner would conduct the camp.

It was planned to collect at least Rs. 1.25 crore of tax arrears during a camp.

In addition to this, a campaign would also be launched in the city in order to encourage the people to pay their taxes promptly, the Commissioner said further.

Mr. Palanisamy asked the officials to put in co-ordinated efforts to collect the tax arrears.

The tax collection should be improved in order to implement more development programmes for the people.

He asked the people and the elected representatives to extend their full support for the efforts made by the civic body.
