Pay tax or face action
The Mettuppalayam Municipality on Monday fixed the last date to pay property tax as March 20.
It has begun disconnecting water supply connections.
The municipality has a tax arrear of Rs. 1.10 crore.
Mettuppalayam Municipal Commissioner G. Elangovan said that more than 6,500 water connection users were yet to remit their water charges resulting in water charges arrears of Rs. 40 lakh.
The municipality has 10,300 water connections.
More than 4,000 people were yet to remit the property tax for the fiscal 2012-2013 and this had resulted in a arrears of Rs. 70 lakh, he said.
The officials had so far disconnected 500 water connections.
One of the assesses had an arrear of Rs. 1 lakh and another owed Rs. 20,000 as water tax arrear, he said.Rentals
The rental arrears from shops belonging to municipality came to Rs. 33 lakh.
The municipality has planned to seal the shops and re-auction them.
