Civic body removes shops

They were functioning in violation of corporation’s orders.

A total of 13 shops that were functioning on the New Bus Stand premises violating he City Municipal Corporation’s order were removed here on Friday.

This comes after the Madras High Court vacated a petition filed by the shop keepers demanding that they be allowed to continue their business.

These shops were granted licenses three years ago based on the agreement that they should sell only products of Aavin. But were found to be selling beverages, tea, biscuits and other items which is against the agreement.

Though the civic body issued notice many a times, they failed to adhere to the rules and they continue to operate. The Tamil Nadu Assembly Committee which inspected the shops in the premises earlier also found that the shops were operated against the rules and submitted a report to the government regarding the same.

Hence the civic body and the Aavin cancelled the licenses that led to the shop keepers filing a petition in the court that was dismissed. The court asked the civic body to carry out eviction after giving dual warning and also with the assistance of the police personnel.

Hence a team of revenue officials from the civic body through the public address system informed the shop keepers to close the shop. Shop keepers entered into altercation with the officials as the police intervened and brought the situation under control. Later the shops were removed completely in the presence of police personnel.
