100-year-old tree falls on busBengaluru, Nov. 17: A hundred-year-old Peepal tree came crashing down on a moving BMTC bus injuring four passengers Wednesday afternoon.
The mishap occurred on Langford Road, near State Hockey Stadium in Shanthinagar, when the bus (Route No. 146), plying between KR Market and Neelasandra, left Akkithimmanahalli bus stop. The tree fell on the rear of the bus but the impact lifted the front end of the vehicle several feet off the ground before it came crashing down sending passengers and passersby into a tizzy.
Eyewitnesses said as the tree fell on the rear of the bus, several casualties were avoided. There were around 30 passengers on board when the accident occurred. Sajid Pasha, 20, who works as a mechanic in Shivajinagar, suffered head injuries and was shifted to Nimhans hospital. Three other passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Mallya Hospital for first aid. “The condition of all the injured are stable,” said a police officer. The accident resulted in a major traffic snarl in the area following the mishap. BBMP Forest Cell officials said the tree was old and hollow. “We’ll soon start identifying old and weak trees in the city,” an officer said.
