14,000 vendors to get licence
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to issue licences to 14,000 street vendors ahead of the Commonwealth Games. The decision was taken in the meeting of the MCD Licensing Committee on Tuesday.
The civic body had received over a lakh applications for licences. “To maintain a record of street vendors, we will give them identification cards,” said Surender Gupta, chairman of the Committee.
Officials of the MCD said it has completed survey of all street vendors and their registration. “We have completed the survey. The process will help keep all forms of unauthorised hawking in check besides monitoring the activities of registered vendors. The database so created will be shared with the Delhi Police as well,” a senior MCD official said.
The issuance of licences and identification cards would also help address issues like mutation of licences or their selling by original allottees to other vendors. As per the policy, non-hawking and hawking zones will also be specifically listed.
According to the new terms, hawking will be prohibited in all residential colonies after 8 pm for security reasons. To implement its regulation plan and relocate vendors removed from unauthorised sites, the MCD has roped in a Delhi-based firm.
