4,019 nominations so far filed in district
Collector urges candidates to limit poll expenses
MALAPPURAM: As many as 3,112 candidates filed nominations for the three-tier local body elections in the district on Thursday. Most of them are for elections to grama panchayats.
Only three nominations were filed to the district panchayat and 61 to 12 block panchayats. As many as 460 candidates filed their papers to the seven municipalities in the district.
District Collector M.C. Mohandas said here on Thursday that 2,588 nominations were filed to 93 grama panchayats. There are 100 grama panchayats in the district.
Till Wednesday, 907 candidates had filed nominations. The total number of nominations filed in four days rose to 4,019.
None filed papers to Nilambur, Mankada and Tirur block panchayats on Thursday. Eleven papers were filed in Kondotty block panchayat, eight in Wandoor block, one in Kalikavu block, seven in Areekode block, five in Malappuram block, 14 in Perinthalmanna block, one in Kuttippuram block, five in Tanur block, one in Vengara block, two in Tirurangadi block, four in Ponnani block and two in Perumbadappu block.
Eighty-seven candidates filed papers in Ponnani municipality, 142 in Tirur municipality, 52 in Perinthalmanna municipality, 60 in Malappuram municipality, 20 in Manjeri municipality, 51 in Kottakkal municipality, and 48 in Nilambur municipality.
The grama panchayats where no nominations were filed on Thursday were Cheriyamundam, Tirurangadi, Irumbiliyam, Keezhattur, Kavanur, Edappatta and Tiruvali.
The Collector asked the candidates to limit their election expenses in accordance with the directives of the State Election Commission. A candidate in a Corporation can spend up to Rs.10,000. A candidate in a municipality or a grama panchayat can spend up to Rs.5,000. The ceiling for a district panchayat candidate is Rs. 30,000, and for a block panchayat candidate it is Rs. 15,000.
