Five fully computerised collection centres were inaugurated in
Kancheepuram for remittance of house, water, property and professional
taxes.
According to Kancheepuram Municipal Commissioner N Vimala,
all the five tax collection centres had begun functioning from Friday.
The centres are located on T K Nambi Street in Chinna Kancheepuram,
municipal office premises (previous town panchayat office) in
Sevilimedu, Krishnan Street in Pillayarpalayam, Orikkai library
premises, and the main municipality office. “Residents of any area can
pay taxes at any of these centres,” she said.
All the centres will
function on weekends as well till March 31. The counters will be open
from 8am to 5pm. If necessary, the collection time will be extended till
8 pm depending on the turnout. After March 31, the counters will
function on weekdays from 8am till 5 pm.
Non collection
After
the expansion of Kancheepuram Municipality that brought in new areas
including Sevilimedu, Nathampettai, Thenambakkam and Orikkai, there were
reports that taxes were not collected from these new neighbourhoods.
There
were also claims that when people from newly-added areas tried to pay
taxes they were turned away stating that data pertaining to the new
areas were not uploaded in the system. Officials said that information
relating to the newly-added areas had been integrated into the municipal
data base now. The new tax payment facilities were inaugurated by
Kancheepuram MLA V Somasundaram. Mythili Thirunavukkarasu, chairperson
of Kancheepuram Municipality presided.
