500 stray cattle to be sent to Delhi cow sheds
The Municipal Corporation has decided to send 500 stray cattle to cow
sheds in Delhi and another 50 to Garhshanker. The decision was taken in
a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee held on Thursday. The
committee has also approved Rs 20 lakh to deal with the menace.
The proposal to send stray cattle to cow sheds outside the city has been doing the rounds for the past two months.
After hitting roadblocks, the approval was given on Thursday.
Apart from sending 500 stray animals out in the first phase, some cattle
will be sent to a cattle shed in Uttar Pradesh.
Since the space for keeping cattle in the city is limited, to
deal with the cattle menace, it was decided that this was the best
solution.
Earlier as well, the MC used to send the cattle out, a practice
that was stalled in 2007. Arguments were witnessed between the Congress
and BJP councillors over the issue during the meeting Thursday.
Meanwhile, during a cattle catching drive by the MC, 20 stray
animals were impounded. The drive was held on Wednesday night. Officials
state that the report against the owners of these cattle will be lodged
with the police under which there is a provision of imprisonment also.
The Municipal Commissioner has formed four teams for catching the cattle
roaming on roads throughout day and night.
