Mumbai: Less than a month before the first phase of the census exercise must close, work has not even started on some 52,500 houses, in about 350 blocks of 150, in parts of Malad in P-North ward and Andheri in K-West ward. The BMC is struggling to allot enumerators for these areas, where the houses have not yet been listed. The BMC has put 27,358 enumerators, 351 short, on the job that includes listing of 41 lakh houses and data entry for the national population register. The team members include 55 per cent from the BMC and the rest from government and semi-government agencies.
The BMC has no option but to raise the workload on the existing enumerators and supervisors. A senior civic official admitted time is running out and if the posts don’t get filled over the next few days then a few existing enumerators, who have already done their share of work, will be handpicked and allotted these houses.
“There are some enumerators who are nearing completion of surveying the 150 houses allotted to them. Since this important national activity has to be completed before June 15, we will have to ask a few enumerators to do another 150 houses,” said the official.
The exercise has about 4,500 supervisors, one for every six enumerators. The BMC also plans to hand over the responsibility of some of the uncounted blocks to supervisors.
