69 p.c. of city residents record biometric data
Biometric data of about 5.40 lakh city residents above
the age of five have been recorded during the first round of special
camps conducted to record the data for the issue of national identity
cards under the National Population Register programme. The special
camps were conducted in the city between October 15 and March 10.
Sixty-nine
per cent of the people covered under the enumeration for the National
Population Register conducted in 2010 were covered during the exercise,
Corporation Commissioner V.P. Thandapani said after distributing
certificates to 110 persons who were deployed for recording the
biometric data at the camps. The recording biometric data such as
fingerprints and Iris was done by a private agency with the corporation
acting as a facilitator.
All those who have been
covered would be issued the identity cards soon. Those who failed to
attend the camps and those who were omitted during the National
Population Register enumeration in 2010 would be covered under the
second round in April.
