71 LDF candidates file their nomination papers
Term of the present corporation council will end today
KOCHI: Nearly 80 candidates from various political parties filed their nomination papers for the Kochi Corporation council election on Thursday.
Barring three candidates, 71 LDF candidates filed their nomination papers on Thursday, said C.K. Manisankar, the district committee member of the CPI(M).
Election meet
An election convention of the LDF will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, on October 2. Senior leaders of the front will address the convention to be held at 5.30 p.m.
The prominent UDF candidates who filed their nomination include A.B. Sabu, N. Venugopal, T.J. Vinod and M.B. Muralidharan. Some sitting councillors, who are in the fray for another term, are expected to file their papers on Friday.
Term ends
Meanwhile, the term of the outgoing council will end on Friday. It was on October 2, 2005 that the present council led by Mayor Mercy Williams took over the reigns of the civic administration. The Mayor visited some prominent citizens of the city including former Judge of the Supreme Court V.R. Krishna Iyer and some religious leaders on Friday as part of her farewell meetings.
Mr. Iyer also presented her a certificate, Ms. Williams said. She will be laying down the office at 4 p.m. on Friday.
In his farewell note, Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar said that he was ending the 22-year-long activities as a councillor of the Kochi Corporation. He had been in the council since 1988 in various capacities including that of the chairmanship of Works and Town Planning standing committees.
