night shelter, talk to those sleeping on the pavements at LV Prasad Eye
Institute on Monday. — DEEPAK DESHPANDE
Hyderabad: In
a rapid survey, 93 teams of the GHMC spread across the twin cities to
identify the number of homeless and ascertain the requirement of night
shelters. The survey was conducted Kapra, Uppal, L.B. Nagar, Charminar,
Rajendernagar, Abids, Alwal, Secunderabad, Serilingampally and
Kukatpally.
GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said the main
purpose of the survey was to ascertain why they stay on roads, without
which any remedial action will be a failure. The homeless identified on
Monday may be a minimum number which is likely to increase when the
climate changes.
The survey will identify the age group of the
homeless and their reasons for living on the streets. We have already
informed the principal secretary, medical & health for setting up of
night shelters at various hospitals, and this proposal will have a
clearer picture with the collection of comprehensive data.
According
to the GHMC, the civic authorities will seek the support of donors
in establishing the night shelters with minimum facilities such as
toilets. The Commissioner further stated that GHMC will involve donors
and NGOs to take responsibility of maintenance of the night
shelters, with financial assistance from GHMC.
