Corporators battle for power
Hyderabad, June 20: The first meeting of the GHMC standing committee on Monday is likely to be a stormy affair with corporators set to take on officials for being denied the power to approve tenders.
The 15 committee members have threatened to boycott the meeting and go to the Chief Minister. They did not rule out the possibility of submitting their resignations to the committee if the power to approve tenders was not restored.
“We are not here to give approval for medical reimbursement of GHMC employees,” said Mr Harivardhan Reddy, committee member from the Congress.
“The Municipal Act is clear that the standing committee can give approval to projects worth between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. Anything below Rs 20 lakh can be sanctioned by the GHMC commissioner,” an MIM corporator said.
“Now, we have been informed that the panel does not have tender approval powers. We are not going to tolerate this,” he said.
When contacted, the GHMC commissioner, Dr Sameer Sharma, said, “The executive process of tendering and subsequent approval is vested with the commissioner. This is not a new rule.”
“I am only trying to implement a rule that was followed by the previous elected body in the MCH,” he said.
