Chandigarh: Approved months ago, several civic body projects have not seen much progress on ground. Ranging from the installation of play equipment to development of parks, a number of projects approved by the Municipal Corporation are yet to take off. In places where work has started, either the pace is tardy or rains have caused delay. In Hallomajra, work on the cremation ground was approved a few months ago. Area councillor Ram Lal says the residents are still awaiting completion of work even though the agenda was approved long ago. “The progress of work is quite slow. A park was to be developed in Hallomajra. The roads in Ramdarbar need to be recarpeted. It seems that only the work of Congress councillors is completed by officials. The councillors of the Opposition are not given importance. I have been requesting for a number of tasks to be taken up in my ward. But this is not being done,” he says.
Even as the civic body had approved a bridge to be constructed near the Housing Board light point in 2006, work is yet to start in the area. The councillors of other wards also have similar complaints. One of the councillors stated that while a large amount of Ward development fund in her area was sanctioned for installation of play equipment in parks and greenbelts, work is yet to start. With elections of the Municipal Corporation scheduled for next year, the councillors want to project their wards in the best light. If all projects that have been approved are completed on time, the face of the wards would change.
Councillor Rajesh Gupta says the officials of the Municipal Corporation need to increase the pace of work. “While projects remain approved for months, there is no work on ground. Being the elected representatives, we are the ones who have to listen to the residents and are held accountable for the incomplete work,” he says.
