Water, sewer leakages blamed for bad roads
HYDERABAD: The blame game regarding the pathetic state of roads in the city continues. Now, apart from incessant rains and indiscriminate road cutting, water and sewer pipeline leakages too are being cited as reasons for damage caused to roads at various places.
Nearly 20 locations have been identified by GHMC officials where either sewer line or water pipeline leakages not only resulted in damaging roads, but are also causing traffic jams.
The places include Musheerabad junction, Jambagh near Vikranth theatre, St John’s rotary, King Koti Hospital, GHMC Secunderabad zonal office lane, Basheerbagh opposite old Gandhi medical college and by the side of the flyover, Rethibowli junction (near Military gate), Shopper’s Stop on SP Road, Nagarjuna circle (near Chutneys and by the side of the flyover ramp) and Punjagutta junction near police station.
GHMC officials blame HMWS&SB for the road damages due to leakages despite “road repairs” recently.
Sources said HMWS&SB workers plugged the water pipeline leakage at Shopper’s Stop on SP Road a couple of days ago after the traffic police intervened and took up the issue of frequent traffic jams to the notice of GHMC commissioner Sameer Sharma and Water Board managing director M Jagadishwar.
“There is a proposal to collect penalty from the Water Board if road is damaged due to leakages of water and sewer lines. At some places, the problem is perennial due to low-lying areas and clogging of lines,” another official said.
“The Board is attending wherever leakages persist. We are planning to issue notices to people who throw waste into manholes like vendors at Jambagh,” HMWS&SB director (technical) SP Prabhakara Sarma told TOI.
