The Times of India 16.08.2010 CHENNAI: Independence day was celebrated in the city by organisations and various d epartments on Sunday. City mayorM Subramanian hoisted the national flag at the Chennai Corporation and honoured 46 employees of the civic body for outstanding performance in carrying out their duties. Subramanian also gave away Rs 20,000 financial assistance each to 10 women.

At the independence day celebrations of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), five drivers having an accident-free record for over 15 years were honoured by transport secretary Atulya Misra, who presented a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each and certificates to them.
Southern Railway, as a part of independence day celebrations, organised a heritage steam locomotive run from Chennai Central to Avadi with the oldest working steam locomotive in the world.
Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifullah, judges of the madras high court, took part at the independence day celebrations organised by Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority.
