PMC’s garden panel to look after open areas’ in city
PUNE: The garden department of the Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC) has formed a garden management committee, comprising citizens and department officials, which will look at cleaning, tree plantations and garden work in the open areas’ of the city.
Members of the committee are from areas like Panchavati, Vimannagar, Aundh and Model colony.
Chief garden superintendent Naresh Zurmure told TOI that the department has identified the open spaces or vacant land, owned by the civic body or handed over to it. “The committee, consisting of around 10 members, will take up plantation drives or garden work in these lots. The idea is to restore such areas and increase the greenery in the city.” The reported nuisance that takes place in such areas will be curbed pro-actively by panel members, who will be given proper identity cards, he added.
“A proposal on how to take up the programme, the role of the committee, selection of plants, among others, is being prepared by the committee members. We are taking the initiative on an experimental basis. The department will get it approved during a general body meeting, if it is successful,” said Zurmure.
The department will support the programme and also provide funding for the same, he added.
