Spell out stand on firecracker stalls, HC to Thane civic body
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday expressed concern over a wholesale firecrackers market that comes up at a congested locality in Thane. Hearing a PIL by a residents’ group, a division bench of Justices Dhananjay Chandrachud and R P Sondurbaldota asked the Thane Municipal Corporation to spell out its stand on the matter.
The judges scheduled the matter for hearing on Friday.
The market comes up before Diwali on Sant Tukaram Road in Kopri. The road is adjacent to the railway station and connects the Eastern Express Highway to Thane (W). According to the petition, along with the shops selling firecrackers, numerous temporary stalls come up on the narrow road. “A minor incident can lead to a disaster,” said Sandesh Patil, counsel for the petitioner. The TMC’s advocate sought time to take instructions in the matter.
