Won’t work under ward officers, say civic engineersThe engineers working at ward offices of the civic body on Tuesday staged a protest against working under assistant municipal commissioner or ward officers.
They alleged that the ward officers were not technically qualified to supervise their work. There are about 4,500 engineers working in the civic body and 25 assistant municipal commissioners.
They handle the work in roads, building proposal and other departments.
More than 2,000 civic engineers protested on Tuesday at Azad Maidan to press for their various demands.
Their main demand was they did not want to work under ward officers.
Baba Kadam, Shiv Sena union leader, said: “The civic body should create equivalent post for ward assistant engineers of departments such as road, building proposal and maintenance.”
Other demands included payment of pending arrears under the sixth pay commission, filling 1,000 vacant posts of engineers in the municipal body and promotion to majority of the engineers for more than five years.
A delegation of the union leaders and the standing committee chairman met Municipal Commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya on Monday with a petition of their demands.
Rahul Shewale, chairman of civic Standing Committee, said: “Almost all the demands have been fulfilled by the administration in the Monday’s meeting, including giving more powers to ward engineers.”
