Standing committees to be formed soon: Mayor
BANGALORE: The issue of forming standing committees has been the cause for much of the ruckus caused by the Opposition parties in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council in the last couple of months. In yet another announcement of date for the formation of the standing committees, Mayor S K Natraj has stated that the committees would be formed in the October monthly meeting.
More than six months after the BBMP council was elected, only one standing committee has been formed till date. The Finance and Taxation committee is the only standing committee set up by the council that is headed by P N Sadashiva. The other committees that need to be set up include Education, Social Justice, Appeals, Horticulture, Markets and Administrative Reforms, Public Health, Town Planning, Major Public Works, Ward-level Public Works and Accounts.
The number of standing committees has been raised to 12 from the earlier existing eight.
The Mayor had earlier said he would meet Law Minister Sureshkumar to discuss if the standing committees that would be formed now could complete a one-year term instead of ending the term with the Mayor’s.
The term of the standing committee ends with the Mayor and since there were only six months left for his term to end, he would see if the committees could carry on for a year and not end with his term.
