Kasaragod: The United Democratic Front registered thumping victory in Kasaragod and Kanhangad municipalities while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) routed the UDF to rule the newly carved out Neeleswaram municipality in the district. With the thumping victory registered by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the UDF romped home in Kasaragod municipality winning 24 seats of the 38-member council. The IUML registered a sweeping victory winning in 18 wards and the Indian National League, which joined the UDF camp ahead of the polls, won in three wards and the Congress got two seats while a UDF-supported independent won from a ward. The BJP demonstrated its sway in the municipal area by winning 11 seats to become the main opposition party while the CPI(M) could win only two wards. The Kollampadi ward was won by an IUML rebel candidate. In the 43-member Kanhangad municipality, the UDF won 22 seats, LDF 16 and the BJP 5. In the 32-member Neeleswaram municipality, the LDF won 20 seats – CPI(M) 19 and the CPI one.
