GVMC to allocate 40 per cent funds for slums

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation’s
budget estimates for 2011-12 will have, for the first time, a separate
head with 40 per cent allocations to slums. Funds from the Rajiv Awas
Yojana (RAY) slum development programme and those from the 13 {+t} {+h}
Finance Commission will also be included in the budget. The 40 per cent
funds for development work covers the 15 per cent, 7.5 per cent and 5
per cent allocations for Scheduled Castes, Tribes and Women and Child
Development.
Disclosing this at the standing committee meeting on the budget on
Thursday, Municipal Commissioner V.N. Vishnu said non-plan grant that
had not been received for the last four years was also expected. The
bills due to contractors for 2009-10 financial year had been cleared and
those for the current year paid up to May. Besides,
Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao said the standing committee members
should discuss the budget threadbare and if necessary department-wise
debate could be taken up. Estimates for 2011-12 and revised budget for
2010-11 were taken up on Thursday and Engineering department’s
expenditure and revenue was discussed.
