VISAKHAPATNAM: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has won the prestigious ‘Best City’ award for 2009-10 for standing first in implementation of reforms in urban infrastructure and governance (UIG) under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The award carries a trophy and Rs.2 lakhs in cash. Municipal Commissioner V.N. Vishnu and Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao will receive the award from Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at the fifth anniversary of JNNURM on December 3.
Mr. Vishnu said a communication was received from the Central Government on being selected for the award and it’s a matter of pride that Visakhapatnam stood first among the 63 mission cities.
The Commissioner and the Mayor thanked everyone concerned, particularly the general body members, officials and staff and citizens, for achieving the award.
