BMC to use South African technology to fill potholesThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to revive the controversial carboncor technology that was rejected by its own vigilance department. Carboncor is a cold tar mix, used for the repair work as against the hot-mix of asphalt and metal. The BMC will use this South African technology not only to fill potholes, but also to surface the roads could develop potholes in the coming monsoon.
The state-appointed Standing Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) had
said the BMC should undertake a pilot project on a 1.5 km stretch.
A year ago, an internal report of the BMC’s vigilance department, said the condition of two roads it inspected where Carboncor was used, had deteriorated.
“This time to be completely sure, we will ask the agency that supplies the material, to give us a bank guarantee of the same amount of money that the BMC gives them,’ said additional municipal commissioner, Aseem Gupta.
Meanwhile, the BMC, for the first time, will seek tenders for road upgradation worth Rs 500 crore online.
For this, the municipal corporation will conduct workshops guiding the contractors on how to apply for tendering and will give them a username and password.
