Explanation sought from Harihar City Municipality
The State Government has issued a notice to the Harihar City
Municipality seeking an explanation on why the Government should not
supersede the civic body as it has not made proper use of the grants
released by the Government and also misappropriated huge sums of money
in the recent past.
Disclosing this to presspersons in Harihar on Tuesday,
Ramesh Meharwade, BJP councillor, alleged that there had been rampant
corruption in the JD(S)-led Harihar City Municipality. Hundreds of
computer systems had been purchased by the civic body at Rs. 35,000 per
system when the market price was in the range of Rs. 14,000 to Rs.
18,000. Moreover, instead of SC/ST people, the computers had been given
to the kith and kin of the JD(S) councillors, he alleged. He said that
the Davangere district administration had already inquired into it and
submitted a report to the Government.
Misappropriation
The civic body had also misappropriated the Chief
Minister’s special grants and had carried out substandard public works
in many parts of Harihar city, Mr. Ramesh alleged. He said that a team
of councillors had submitted a report to the Government in this regard
some time ago, after which the Government had issued a notice seeking an
explanation from the civic body on why the Government should not
supersede it.
Suresh Teradal, Gowdara Papanna, Srinivas, H. Venkatesh
were among others present. The JD(S) has been in power in the civic
body for two and a half years.
